Treatment
Many allopathic doctors are not fully literate in SIBO and do not offer protocols for this, but treatment might be a combination of antibiotics. Antibiotics are often not used for long enough, and recurrence often develops in patients. Antibiotic use comes with the risk of antibiotic resistance.
Aside from offering the correct dietary recommendations (e.g. low histamine and bi-phasic FODMAP diet) to remove fermentable carbohydrates for a period of time), in our clinic, we are well-versed in the herbal treatments available to us.
Combination herbal protocols (i.e. not just one or two herbs used in high doses as is done by most doctors or nutritionists with little understanding of how to use herbs and how herbs work) when used properly are much more effective for eliminating SIBO and usually accompanying SIFO* (small intestinal fungal overgrowth, for which there is currently no test). We also use a variety of pro kinetics and always use binders when dealing with die off.
We not only address the presenting issues, but look at addressing the underlying causes and predisposing factors such as abnormalities in gut motility, vagal dysautonomia, or underlying autoimmune issues, in order to prevent recurrence. If there are underlying scar tissue issues, we often use Frequency Specific Microcurrent to address these underlying issues.
