  • Schisandra is an adaptogen, traditionally used in Chinese medicine for lung and immune deficiency, as well as inflammation and oxidative stress. Known as the five-flavour berry (Wu Wei Zi) as it includes the five tastes of bitter, sour, sweet, salty and acrid, Schisandra chinensis has been used for over 2000 years in China and described as a valuable tonic.  In Russia, it has been used by Nanai hunters as an energy tonic, to improve their night vision and reduce exhaustion, hunger and thirst.  It enhances athletic performance, builds core energy and supports the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and reduces neurotoxicity.
  • Schisandra has been shown to increase liver function by supporting glutathione production and liver detoxification pathways.
  • Used to improve adaptation to darkness, especially for shift workers or those who work late at night. It is used in Chinese medicine for insomnia and depresion.
  • Schisandra is known to having some antimicrobial functions against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus spp., Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudeomonas aeruginosa, Proteus vulgaris, Bacillus dysenteriae, fungi, and viruses.
